STARscanner 3D Imaging
What STARscanner 3D Imaging Involves
The STARscanner captures your baby's entire head shape with safe laser light in a couple of seconds. There is no radiation, no sedation, and no plaster casting. The resulting 3D model drives helmet fabrication and gives us objective numbers to track correction at every visit.
Who Needs This
- Any baby starting cranial remolding treatment
- Babies needing precise measurements to grade severity
- Families who want objective progress tracking, not eyeballing
- Post-op craniosynostosis patients being refit as they grow
- Babies who cannot tolerate plaster casting
- Parents wanting documentation for an insurance authorization
How Treatment Works
- 01
Comfortable positioning
Your baby sits on your lap or is held for a few seconds — no restraints, no sedation.
- 02
Two-second capture
The scanner sweeps once. That is the whole procedure.
- 03
Digital model
We get a full 3D model of the head, accurate to the millimeter.
- 04
Measurement report
Cranial vault asymmetry and cephalic index are calculated automatically.
- 05
Helmet design
The model goes straight into helmet fabrication — no guesswork in between.
- 06
Progress rescans
We rescan through treatment and show you the before-and-after overlay.
What Affects Your Cost
- Scanning is included as part of helmet treatment
- Standalone evaluation scans are covered by the free consultation
- Insurance coverage applies to the orthosis, not the scan itself
- Additional scans during treatment are included
- Post-op courses often need more scans as new helmets are made
- No added cost for scanning at a travel visit

FAQs
STARscanner 3D Imaging FAQs
Is the STARscanner safe?
Yes. It uses safe laser light, not X-rays or any ionizing radiation.
Does my baby need to hold still?
Only for about two seconds, and we can hold them during the capture.
Why not just use measurements by hand?
Hand measurements miss subtle asymmetry. A 3D scan gives numbers we can compare visit to visit.
Can we see the images?
Yes. We show you the model and the progress overlays at every scan.
Is the scan alone enough to know if we need a helmet?
The scan plus a clinical exam is how we grade severity and make the recommendation.
What if my baby is asleep?
That is fine — asleep babies scan beautifully.
