Custom 3D Helmets
What Custom 3D Helmets Involves
Every helmet we fit is made to your baby's own scan. 3D printing lets us produce a thinner, lighter, better-ventilated shell than traditional fabrication, which matters a great deal when a baby wears it 23 hours a day through a Colorado summer.
Who Needs This
- Babies starting treatment for plagiocephaly or brachycephaly
- Post-op craniosynostosis patients needing serial helmets
- Babies who overheat easily in a heavier shell
- Families who want a low-profile look under hats and car seats
- Babies needing a replacement after outgrowing helmet one
- Anyone whose current helmet fits poorly and needs a fresh scan
How Treatment Works
- 01
Scan
STARscanner or SmartSoc captures the head shape exactly.
- 02
Design
We define where the helmet holds contact and where it leaves growth room.
- 03
Printing
The shell is printed to that geometry with ventilation built in.
- 04
Lining and finishing
Foam lining is added and edges are finished smooth before you ever see it.
- 05
Fitting
We fit, check the skin, and set your break-in schedule.
- 06
Ongoing adjustment
We trim and relieve the helmet every one to two weeks as your baby grows.
What Affects Your Cost
- Whether your insurance plan covers cranial remolding orthoses (code S1040)
- Your remaining deductible and coinsurance for the plan year
- Whether a second helmet is needed for a longer course of treatment
- Medicaid, TRICARE, and commercial plans each handle prior authorization differently
- How early treatment starts — earlier correction usually means a shorter course
- Whether visits happen at our office or we travel to you

FAQs
Custom 3D Helmets FAQs
How much does the helmet weigh?
A few ounces. Most babies barely react to putting it on after the first few days.
Will my baby get too hot?
The printed shell is vented. We also coach you on summer wear and keeping the lining dry.
Can we decorate it?
Yes — plain vinyl decals are popular. We will tell you what to avoid so ventilation stays open.
How do we clean it?
Daily with rubbing alcohol or mild soap during the one hour off. We show you exactly how.
What if it leaves a red mark?
Light pink that fades within 20 minutes is normal. Anything more, call us and we will adjust it.
Will we need a second helmet?
Sometimes, especially with post-op or younger babies who grow through the first one.
