Scaphocephaly Treatment
What Scaphocephaly Treatment Involves
Scaphocephaly describes a head that looks longer and narrower than usual when viewed from above. A long, narrow shape can be related to positioning, particularly in babies born prematurely, but it can also be associated with early closure of the sagittal suture — a form of craniosynostosis. The shape alone does not tell us the cause. Your pediatrician or craniofacial team should assess any concern about suture closure before we consider helmet treatment.
Who Needs This
- Parents noticing a long, narrow head shape from above
- Babies born prematurely or with a history of prolonged side-lying
- Families referred by their pediatrician for a head shape evaluation
- Babies with persistent shape differences despite repositioning guidance
- Babies aged 3 to 18 months being considered for cranial remolding
- Families seeking local helmet care after clearance from a surgical team
How Treatment Works
- 01
Talk through your concerns
At a free consultation, we review your baby's age, birth history, head shape, and any recommendations from your pediatrician.
- 02
Check the cause
If there is concern about early suture closure, we direct you back to your pediatrician or a craniofacial specialist. A surface scan cannot rule out craniosynostosis.
- 03
Measure head shape
When appropriate, we use radiation-free 3D surface imaging to record head shape and establish a baseline for comparison.
- 04
Choose the right next step
Monitoring, repositioning guidance, or therapy may be enough. We recommend helmets only when the shape difference is moderate to severe and treatment is appropriate.
- 05
Fit a custom helmet if needed
Your certified orthotist chooses a helmet design for your baby's needs. For post-surgical care, we follow the surgeon's instructions and clearance.
- 06
Follow your baby's growth
We check fit, skin, and measurements throughout treatment, adjusting the plan to your baby's growth and any specialist guidance.

FAQs
Scaphocephaly Treatment FAQs
Is scaphocephaly the same as craniosynostosis?
Not always. Scaphocephaly describes a long, narrow shape. Sagittal craniosynostosis is early closure of a skull suture and can cause that shape. A medical evaluation is needed to distinguish the causes.
Does every baby with a long, narrow head need a helmet?
No. The cause, severity, age, and growth pattern all matter. We only recommend helmet treatment for moderate-to-severe shape differences when it is clinically appropriate.
Can a helmet treat a fused suture on its own?
No. A helmet cannot reopen a fused suture or replace evaluation by a craniofacial or neurosurgical team. Some babies use a helmet after surgery, following their surgeon's plan.
When should we ask about treatment?
Bring concerns to your pediatrician as soon as you notice them. For appropriate positional helmet treatment, 4 to 6 months is our preferred starting window; we evaluate babies from 3 to 18 months individually. Surgical care has its own timing.
Can a 3D scan diagnose a fused suture?
No. Our scans measure the outside shape of the head. They do not show the sutures or replace a medical examination and any tests your specialist recommends.
Can we see you after craniosynostosis surgery?
Yes. If your surgeon recommends post-operative helmet therapy, we coordinate timing, fitting, and follow-up with the surgical team.
